The main heroine of this story, Masha, does not go with the flow and often does everything out of defiance. Other people find this incomprehensible and even irritating. But as a result, Masha unexpectedly emerges from a situation as the winner and it is not "thanks to", but "despite" everything that she gains happiness. It would seem that everything around Masha is shaping up perfectly. After graduation, she gets a good job at the bank. She has a fiance—a promising lawyer named Igor. They are already planning their honeymoon. But suddenly Masha becomes a witness to his betrayal. That one betrayal is enough to break up the relationship. Despite the turmoil in her personal life, Masha is successful at work. The Managing Director, Gennady, appreciates thebusiness qualities and the beauty of his young employee. Masha is appointed head of her department. Her rapid promotion leads to gossip among the team. Rumours spread that there's no smoke without fire. Masha's successful career is especially irritating to Zinaida, Gennady's mistress and deputy. She dreams of marrying the managing director. And Masha has inadvertently become a rival. So instead of her usual work, Mashafalls into the thick of intrigues. Zinaida struggles to discredit and compromise Masha in Gennady's eyes. But honest and open Masha does not even realize what is happening—until Gennady openly tells Masha that he likes her not as a hard-working and diligent employee, but as a woman. She could have taken advantage of this situation. But Masha does everything out of defiance. She rejects the Managing Director’s advances and sincerely falls in love with a security guard, Egor. During an attack on the bank, this ordinary guy heroically neutralises the robbers and protects Masha. She sees a real man in him, someone with whom she could spend the rest of her life. Masha's parents meet Egor and thank him for saving their daughter. But they are horrified at the news of the upcoming wedding. This wealthy family is not ready to accept a security guard—an orphan without education or prospects. They demand that Masha break up with Egor. Masha is absolutely against it. But Egor does not pass the next test, acquaintance with the bride’s friends, the so-called "gilded youth". Egor is worried and tries to smooth over his quarrel with Masha. One day, when he's a bit drunk, Masha sees him in the company of a girl. Another betrayal? The situation is skilfully taken advantage of by Igor. He asks for forgiveness, behaves like a friend, and asks Masha to go with him to Venice—the city of her dreams. But during a walk with Igor in the park, Masha unexpectedly meets Egor. Once glance is enough for them sto understand that their feelings are still strong.
